The provincial capital of 'Noord Holland', Amsterdam is also and capital city of The Kingdom of The Netherlands - a constitutional monarchy.

Amsterdam's name recalls origins as a 14th century village with a Dam across to the Amstel river.

'The Netherlands' name refers to the countries altitude - with more than 25% of the land surface lying below sea level.

Located on the western edge of the country 15km inland from the North Sea coast, much of Amsterdam is at or below sea level.

When to Visit Amsterdam

High season extends from the end of May to the beginning of October - Amsterdam's summer months, with long summer nights (more..)

During this period both flights and accommodation are typically more expensive, and it is wise to book both well in advance to get the best deals.

During low season (excluding Xmas / New Year period and 'Queens Day' on April 30th prices are lower - and availability mush improved. Queues for attractions are also significantly lower.
